Planning a Group Trip to Himachal by Tempo Traveller

Suryawanshi Tours & Travels, 1 Oct 2026

Travelling to Himachal as a big family or a group of friends? Here is how to choose the right vehicle, plan the route and avoid the common mistakes.

A group trip to the hills is at its best when everyone travels together. One vehicle means one conversation, one playlist and nobody waiting at a turn for the second car. For groups of around ten or more, that vehicle is usually a tempo traveller.

This guide covers what a tempo traveller is, when it makes sense, and how to plan a Himachal trip around one.

What is a tempo traveller?

It is a mini-bus style van with pushback seats, built for longer road trips. Ours seat 12 to 17 people. You hire it with a driver for the whole trip, so the same vehicle and driver stay with your group from pickup to drop.

When it is the right choice

  • Your group is too big for one car and you would otherwise need two or three cabs.
  • You want everyone together, especially with children and grandparents in the same group.
  • You have a lot of luggage. A tempo traveller has more room for bags than several small cars.
  • You want one experienced hill driver to handle the whole route.

For four to six people, a car such as an Innova is usually more comfortable and easier to park. See our taxi service for that.

How to choose the size

Count the people, then count the bags. On long hill drives a little spare room makes a big difference, so if you are exactly twelve people with full luggage, ask about the next size up. Tell us if anyone needs a front seat because of motion sickness or easier access.

Routes that work well for groups

  • Chandigarh to Shimla, with Kufri and Naldehra: a relaxed first trip for mixed-age groups.
  • Shimla to Manali: about 250 km and 7 to 8 hours, so plan it as a full travel day with a proper lunch stop.
  • Manali with the Atal Tunnel and Sissu: an easy day out from Manali that most groups enjoy.
  • Shimla to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj: about 240 km, best done with an early start.

Things groups often get wrong

  1. Planning too many places. Hill roads are slow. Two towns done well are better than four seen through a window.
  2. Starting late. Leave early so you drive in daylight. Night driving in the hills is tiring and best avoided.
  3. Ignoring hotel access. Not every hill hotel has a road or parking that suits a larger vehicle. Choose hotels with parking, or check where the vehicle will drop you.
  4. Forgetting town restrictions. The centre of Shimla, including Mall Road and the Ridge, is closed to vehicles, so expect a short walk from the drop point.
  5. Leaving permits to the last day. Some places, such as Rohtang Pass, need a permit and have a daily limit on vehicles. Plan that day in advance.
  6. Skipping breaks. Stop every couple of hours. It keeps children, elders and the driver fresh.
